Our next step was to figure out the logistics: sourcing, process and sustainability.
Where We Find It
We’re dedicated to sourcing the highest quality ingredients for our food, no matter where they can be found in the world. Our research led us to the rocky shores of Nova Scotia, in a small town called Yarmouth, a hub for seaweed harvesting. The harvesters here are exceptionally talented – their extensive knowledge and intuition spans generations, and their skill transcends the line between a trade and an art. The harvesters make two daily harvesting trips, and throughout their tenure have mastered climate patterns, wind trends and more.
How We Harvest It
The harsh conditions of Northeast Canada produce the ideal strain of seaweed to integrate into Supreme Source pet food. A lush interior and rocky shore make up the coastline, making the seaweed incredibly durable, pure and natural. Rain or shine, summer or winter, it is harvested by hand in small batches, sun-dried and blended into our food. Before harvesting trips, every seaweed bed is mapped out and an aerial photograph is taken. It can only be collected during low tide, so the harvesters must be efficient.
Why It Works
Most farmers tear up the roots of the plant with a machine. Our seaweed is USDA organic and hand-harvested. The expert farmers are skilled in selecting the healthiest plants possible and harvesting only from the top of the plant to keep roots undamaged. This way, the plant can grow back quickly and continue to provide more batches. Plus, the local ecosystem remains stable, as many other organisms depend on the nutrient-rich seaweed.
